'FIRST CLASS' AIR TRAVEL IN THE ARMED SERVICES

COMPLETE WITH 'STEWARDESS!"

SUBMITTED BY OUR PAL ANDRIS

Rec'd 12-5-04

That pix is not about "air travel"!

That's a picture of the 82nd Airborne getting ready to go on a jump.

Refer to the first soldier in the leftmost row - you can clearly see the reserve chute above the rucksack. The oblong "handle" that looks like a carabiner is used to deploy the reserve parachute.

Directly across from him you see that the soldier has a weapons case strapped to his left leg. The weapons case runs from below his armpit to the bottom of his leg. The yellow strap is used to close the bottom of the weapons case.

Directly behind him, on the other side of the divider, you see three gray items that look like life jackets. Those are the parachutes worn by the Air Force personnel.

And that's not a "stewardess" by any stretch of the imagination. She's part of the crew and could be part of the load master crew. You NEVER mess with them. They can ground the entire flight for the tiniest detail.

If you zoom in on the pix, you can see some of the static lines which are made of heavy yellow fabric. They run from the pack tray up to the top of the "deployment bag" and over the paratrooper's shoulder.

Each paratrooper hooks the static line to the cable that runs the length of the aircraft. When the solder exits the aircraft, the static line snaps taught and pulls the pack tray from the deployment bag, forcing the parachute to deploy.

There are a couple of paratroopers still entering the aircraft. You can see them at the back of the picture, with their rucksacks hanging below their knees. When going on a jump, the rucksack is hooked to the front of the harness where it hangs upside down. That makes it impossible to walk normally so all the troops look like ducks, waddling along with their rucksacks banging into their knees.
